- MPH Student Competency Self-Assessment - This survey is meant to inform the MPH program on how well it instructs students in the knowledge areas and competencies required by our accrediting body, the Council on Education for Public Health. As students enter the program, we ask them to report on their knowledge as a baseline measure. We do not expect students to be expert in the knowledge areas and competencies that they will see on the survey; we also realize that some students will have prior experience that makes them feel competent in some areas. Please answer the survey truthfully; there is no “correct” response, and it’s appropriate to indicate that you know nothing at all about a knowledge area or competency. The MPH program will ask you to complete this survey at least two more times while you are in the program—about mid-way through your studies and upon graduation. The program uses aggregated, anonymized results from this survey to assess how well it is training MPH students in public health knowledge and competence.

Public Health Seminars
The Division of Epidemiology and the other public health departments offer regular seminars. Information on Division of Epidemiology seminars is posted at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters on the Division seminar webpage.
PhD students are required to attend all Division of Epidemiology seminars. MPH students are required to attend a total of 12 seminars during their time in the Program that are designated for PhD students, 6 per year for full-time students. To receive credit for attendance at Division seminars, students must sign in on the attendance sheet circulated at the seminar. Students may also attend up to 3 non-departmental research presentations per year, but must obtain approval for credit by contacting the Director of Educational Programs prior to attendance.
MPH students attending seminars not sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology or other professional conferences may receive 1 seminar credit per event. An event is defined as a seminar lasting approximately 1 hour or, if a day-long conference is attended, only 1 seminar credit may be earned per day. Students may be able to earn more credits for attendance at the American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting at the discretion of program administration. Any time a student wishes to obtain seminar credit for attending a presentation outside of the department, the student must submit a brief written summary using an on-line form available through Blackboard. This form documents student attendance at the seminar.

Parking and Transportation Resources:
Upon registration finalization (through eServices) students may request a semester parking permit and/or GRTC bus pass directly through VCU Parking and Transportation services. These items are not available until students are officially registered in classes at VCU.

John C. Forbes - Graduate Student Honors Colloquium
This annual event is held to recognize graduate students who have distinguished themselves by the quality of their research. Students selected give oral presentations of their research.
Daniel T. Watts Research Symposium
Traditionally held in the early Fall, the Watts Research Symposium is structured as a series of research poster presentations by students and post-doctorals in the science disciplines. The program is coordinated through the Office of Graduate Education in the School of Medicine by a Student Committee composed of representatives of participating units. Poster presentations of ongoing research by students in all areas of science are welcome; in the past several years presentations have come from the Schools of Pharmacy, Engineering, Nursing, and the College of Humanities and Sciences as well as presentations by students in the School of Medicine.
Christopher "Kim" Buttery Award
Christopher M.G. ("Kim") Buttery, M.D., M.P.H., has been a life-long proponent of public health, who has taught hundreds of students in VCU’s Master of Public Health Program since the early 1990s. This award has been established in his honor to recognize annually one student who has demonstrated excellence in chronic disease epidemiology and bridging research and public health practice.
Charles C. Clayton Fellowships
Fellowships are awarded to students in the second year of advanced degree study based on performance criteria in both the didactic and research aspects of advanced degree training. The Office of Graduate Education of the School of Medicine sets selection criteria.
Marion Waller Scholarships (MCV Campus only)
This award is made to a female graduate student with dependent child(ren) who is a Virginia resident and eligible for financial aid. Departments nominate a student based on the above criteria and any information that supports the nomination. A single nomination is made by the School of Medicine with an award of $1,000 applied to the Fall term after submission of the nomination.
Delta Eta Chapter , Delta Omega Honorary in Public Health
Delta Eta was established in 2016, Delta Eta is VCU’s chapter of Delta Omega, Honorary Society in Public Health. Membership in the Delta Omega honorary society represents excellence in the study and practice of public health and a commitment to the field. Selected students are in the top 10% of each graduating class academically; each year, we also induct certain outstanding alumni and VCU faculty, and honor community members who contribute to the practice of public health.
Alpha Epsilon Lambda
Alpha Epsilon Lambda, a graduate student honor society, was founded in 1990 by several leaders in the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students with the specific objective of recognizing the academic and leadership accomplishments of graduate and professional students. Before Alpha Epsilon Lambda, no honor society was devoted exclusively to recognizing graduate students. Alpha Epsilon Lambda's purpose is to promote ethics, intellectual achievement and leadership among graduate students. In 2011, VCU became the 44th chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda. Only 1 percent of VCU graduate students will receive this high honor.
Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society
Phi Kappa Phi is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship. It accepts members from applied and professional fields of study as well as from letters, arts, sciences and humanities. Each year, the VCU chapter may elect outstanding members of the university faculty and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. Nominations, are submitted by graduate program administration. Nominations are typically considered early in the Spring semester.

Division of Epidemiology Graduate Student Reception
The Division recognizes all graduating students in an academic year at the end of the spring semester. Each student receives individual recognition from an advisor or other faculty member.
School of Medicine Graduate Student Recognition Ceremony
The School of Medicine holds a ceremony each May in which graduate students are recognized for their achievements. Department representatives announce winners of department-based or school-based awards or students who have made other exceptional achievements. The spotlight is on graduating students, but continuing students may be recognized, as well.

MPH Program Graduates
VCU MPH program graduates are highly successful in finding work or further education. More than 90% of MPH graduates in the last 5 years either were employed within 6 months of graduation or pursuing further study. More than half of our students find positions in a university or government setting. Usually around one-fifth pursue further education. The remainder find jobs in non-profit organizations, health systems, or private companies. Job placements include:
- State or local health department offices (e.g. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana) in positions such as district epidemiologist, HIV specialist, or program analyst.
- University or healthcare systems, as members of research teams, including Virginia Commonwealth University, Rutgers University, the University of Virginia, and The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
- Non-profit organizations—ranging from national organizations such as the American Heart Association to local ones such as the Virginia Healthcare Foundation and the Health Brigade
- Other governmental organizations such as the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority
- Private companies such as Booz Allen Hamilton, The EI Group, or the Lewin group
- Fellowships with the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists
Some alumni pursue doctoral degrees in epidemiology, psychology, social work, nursing, and more, while others pursue clinical study in medicine or nursing.
