Research

The Department of Epidemiology has a diverse and innovative research program that aims to better understand health and illness, as well as the intersections between behavior and physiology.

Our faculty collaborate with VCU's interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, and involve Epidemiology students and postdoctoral fellows in knowledge creation and improved population health.

Epidemiology faculty are currently engaged in the following research areas:

  • The role of genetic and environmental factors in health conditions and their influence on public health best practices
  • Advancing effective treatment programs for patients with Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Understanding the links between various social determinants of health and health outcomes
  • Assessing factors that contribute to eating behaviors and physical activity, and addressing disparities among underserved communities
  • Studying the links between sleep disturbances and cancer diagnosis and survival rates
